Protecting your dog from extreme heat

Our dogs are particularly sensitive to heat and rely entirely on us to keep them safe. Here are the right habits to adopt to ensure they have a calm, heatstroke-free summer.

Summer means long sunny walks and outdoor adventures… but for our dogs, it’s often a bit less fun. Unlike us, they can’t sip lemonade or chill in the shade with a fan. Their comfort, safety — and sometimes even their life — depends entirely on us.

🌡️ Signs of heatstroke to watch out for

Dogs don’t sweat like we do — their sweat glands are mostly located under their paw pads. To cool off, they pant… but that’s not always enough in hot weather.

Watch out for these warning signs:

Heavy panting, rapid breathing
Purplish nose, lips, or gums
Extreme fatigue, disorientation, trouble standing
Body temperature > 104°F / 40°C
Shaking, vomiting, or even unconsciousness

➡️ This is a veterinary emergency. Contact a professional immediately. While waiting, place your dog in the shade, in front of a fan, or wrap them in a damp (not cold!) towel.

🐾 Protect those paws – it’s a must!

Pavement can heat up to 122°F to 140°F (50–60°C) in the summer. Try placing your hand on it for 5 seconds — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them!

💡 Tips:

Walk early in the morning or late in the evening
Prefer grassy or dirt paths
Use dog booties or apply a non-toxic paw balm (they will lick it!)
Check their paws after every walk

☀️ Yes, dogs can get sunburned too

Dogs can also suffer from sunburn, especially on hairless or light-colored areas like the belly, nose, ears, and lips.

Use a pet-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+, no toxic ingredients). But ideally, try to limit sun exposure altogether.

💧 Hydration & cooling — the winning combo

Water is life — especially in the summer. Your dog should always have access to fresh water and drink regularly.

➡️ When going out: bring a bottle and a portable bowl, take breaks in the shade.

Want to go the extra mile? Here are a few options:

Cooling mats (check the materials)
Cooling collars or vests
Fan + frozen water bottle nearby
Lukewarm showers (not cold — avoid thermal shock!)

🚫 What not to do

Some ideas might seem logical but are actually harmful:

❌ Shaving your dog (unless medically recommended): their fur protects them from the sun
❌ Leaving your dog in the car — even for 5 minutes, even in the shade: life-threatening
❌ Spraying cold water directly on their head or back
❌ Forcing them to run or play in the heat
