Travelling with your dog: Managing your stay and alternatives

Arrival, adaptation, safety… and care solutions if needed: everything you need to ensure your dog’s well-being during your stay, according to Pet Cheri experts.

The journey is behind you, the suitcases are unpacked… but for your dog, the real experience is only just beginning. A new environment, new smells, new landmarks: once you arrive, everything changes for them. To ensure the stay remains a positive experience, a few essential habits make all the difference. And sometimes, despite all the preparation, another option may be the best one: not bringing them along. Here’s how to make the right choices, always prioritising their well-being.

On-site: best practices for a successful stay

Give your dog time to adjust

Once you arrive, your dog needs time to explore their new environment at their own pace. Avoid overwhelming them with too many activities on the first day. A calm walk to discover the surroundings, a meal in their usual bowl, and a night in their familiar bed are enough to set the foundation for a smooth and reassuring stay.

Respect local regulations

Leash laws, dog-restricted areas, waste collection rules… regulations vary from one city and country to another. Make sure to check them in advance and follow them carefully. As a pet owner, you are your dog’s first ambassador.

Be aware of destination-specific risks

Extreme heat, toxic local plants, wildlife, potentially contaminated beaches, disease-carrying mosquitoes… every destination comes with its own risks. Do some targeted research before you leave and keep the contact details of a local veterinarian within easy reach.

Hydration and temperature: never underestimate the heat

Dogs regulate their temperature mainly through panting, which is far less effective than human sweating. In summer or in warm regions, avoid walks during the hottest hours (between 11am and 4pm), ensure constant access to fresh water, and provide a shaded place to rest. Heatstroke can be fatal and can happen very quickly.

🧐 What if you ultimately can’t bring your dog?

Sometimes, despite the best intentions, bringing your dog simply isn’t the right option. An inaccessible destination, a dog that is too anxious to travel, unsuitable accommodation, or a journey that is too long… in these cases, the most caring decision is to arrange high-quality care rather than exposing them to a stressful experience.

Choosing the right care provider is just as important as planning the trip itself. A dog placed in the wrong environment may experience intense anxiety, exactly what you’re trying to avoid.

At Pet Cheri, we support every owner who cannot travel with their dog with the same level of care as if they were. Thanks to a detailed questionnaire covering over 35 aspects of your pet’s profile, habits, and needs, we match them with the most suitable caregiver. In-home care, multiple daily visits, or carefully selected host families: every solution is tailored to your dog, not to fill a schedule.

Because leaving with peace of mind also means knowing your companion is in truly good hands.
